CON EDISON A MAJOR SPONSOR OF THE WORLD SCIENCE FESTIVAL
Sustainability Programs Spotlight Breadth Of Global Research
NEW YORK – Con Edison is a major sponsor of the World Science Festival ’08, designed to help transform public perceptions of science. The festival, held in New York City between tomorrow and Sunday, will feature a variety of programs in its inaugural year, bringing together many of the world’s greatest minds in science, business, public policy, and culture.
The festival will highlight cutting-edge ideas and discoveries, revealing science’s role in addressing critical global issues through lectures, panels, and debates, as well as film, music, theater, and interactive events. Signature events will include “Future Cities,” featuring architects, urban planners, and technologists; “Powering the Planet” will address the global quest for renewable energy.
“The World Science Festival features everything from civic initiatives for mitigating carbon emissions, to strategies for dealing with natural resource shortfalls and developing new sources of energy,” said Frances A. Resheske, senior vice president of Public Affairs at Con Edison. “Programs that incorporate viewpoints and strategies about urban sustainability, technology, and energy supply complement the “green” emphasis of our EnergyNY program and the environmental concerns we share with others. It’s also a reason Con Edison is a major sponsor for the festival.”
EnergyNY, the company's recently announced plan to meet the future energy needs of its customers through energy efficiency programs and infrastructure upgrades, can be viewed at http://www.conEd.com/energyny.
World Science Festival events will be held at more than 20 venues throughout New York City, featuring Nobel Laureates, top science researchers, as well as creative artists and performers, all dedicated to showing how scientific discovery and innovation are shaping modern life. The festival also will involve Columbia University, New York University and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and leading cultural institutions throughout the city.
On Saturday, May 31, the streets around Washington Square Park will be turned into the World Science Festival Street Fair between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. with a non-stop program of interactive exhibits, experiments, games, and shows designed to entertain and inspire. Among what’s available:
