CON EDISON SPONSORS A WHEELY BIG SHOW
BIKE NEW YORK: THE GREAT FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR
NEW YORK -- Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) presents the 25th anniversary of BIKE NEW YORK: The Great Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 5 at 8:00 a.m. starting at Battery Park. This is the sixth consecutive year of Con Edison’s sponsorship of the nation’s largest mass-cycling event. More than 30,000 riders from across the country and abroad are expected to ride.
“Bike New York is a healthy way to see the diversity that New York City has to offer,” said Frances A. Resheske, Con Edison’s senior vice president of public affairs. “This family-oriented fun ride is the perfect opportunity to explore all five boroughs. Con Edison is proud to sponsor this silver jubilee for what has become a rite of spring for thousands of New Yorkers,” said Resheske.
The Tour is produced by Bike New York, Inc. and the New York City Department of Transportation. WCBS-FM radio personality Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow kicks off the 42-mile Tour, rain or shine, at the starting line in Battery Park.
The Tour will take riders north through Central Park and Harlem to the Bronx, down the FDR Drive and over the Queensboro Bridge. The riders will then pedal along the Brooklyn waterfront, and finally cross the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island, the site of Festival 2002 at Fort Wadsworth in the Gateway National Recreation Area.
The picnic-like setting of Festival 2002 will feature live music, food and beverage concessions, displays, bike services and souvenir merchandise. Con Edison staff will also be available at the festival providing customer information on request.
Along the Tour route, Con Edison employees will join other volunteers assisting cyclists at the five official Tour rest stops, including the Con Edison Learning Center in Long Island City, Queens. Con Edison employees also will be rolling along the Tour route as members of the Power Wheelers bike team. The Power Wheelers meet regularly throughout the year for bike tours around the region. Many Power Wheelers serve as official bike marshals for the Tour, providing advice on bike safety, repair and maintenance techniques.
