Middle School Students Benefit From Conference About Careers In Natural Resources And The Environment

New York, N.Y. - For the sixth consecutive year, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) today sponsored Green Horizons, a conference offering middle school students hands-on lessons about a variety of natural resources and environmental careers.

Students from 45 schools throughout the city gathered in Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx, where they visited 22 stations offering activities including soil science, entomology, field ecology, horticulture, woodland restoration, animal ecology and conservation planning.

“Green Horizons reaches far beyond talking to students about environmental careers,” said Con Edison’s general manager for Environmental Health & Safety and Operation Services, Dr. Mary Ellen Conlin. “The conference puts students in direct contact with the professionals and situations they will encounter in real natural resources and environmental work settings. Conducting soil sample tests, preparing tree planting sites, measuring air quality, collecting medicinal herbs, building bird houses, plus other fun activities engaging students in a unique learning experience to seed their career decisions. Con Edison is pleased to sponsor this wonderful event.”

Con Edison’s health and safety program extends into every part of the organization and recognizes the company’s responsibility to protect the environment.

The company’s environmental policy has been internationally recognized for going beyond compliance to achieve “environmental excellence.” This commitment is exemplified by the company’s endorsement of the principles of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES).

The company’s vigilance in safeguarding the marine environment of New York City and the Hudson Valley earned it the U.S. Coast Guard William M. Benkert Award for Excellence in Marine Environmental Protection.

Con Edison’s Environment, Health and Safety department achieved International Standards Organization certification - the first such ISO certification for a corporate environmental, health and safety department in the United States. Two other Con Edison organizations - Gas Operations and Steam Field Services - also achieved ISO 14001 certification during the year. A fourth organization, our Transportation and Stores department, certified in 1998, was re-certified this year.

New York ReLeaf, the Environmental Education Advisory Council and the Magnolia Tree Earth Center of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc facilitated Green Horizons.
