CON EDISON TO HOLD PUBLIC FORUM ON EAST RIVER REPOWERING PLAN
Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) will hold the fourth in a series of public awareness forums on its plan to repower its East River generating station located at East 14th Street and Avenue D in Manhattan. The forum will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2000, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Public School 34, located at 730 East 12 Street, at Avenue D.
Con Edison projects that the East River Repowering Plan also would generate additional city and state tax revenue, create hundreds of high-paying construction jobs, increase access to the waterfront and stimulate significant economic activity in the city.
The primary focus of the repowering plan is to enhance and improve Con Edison's ability to reliably and economically supply steam by installing a state-of-the-art steam generation facility in an unused portion of the East River generating station. The plan calls for replacing the steam production capacity of the company's Waterside generating station, located on First Avenue between 38th and 40th Streets, with new capacity at the East River station.
“We are excited about the economic and environmental benefits the East River Repowering Plan will offer as we enter the 21st century," said Stephen B. Bram, senior vice president of central operations for Con Edison. "Con Edison welcomes public involvement throughout this project and we will continue to work very hard to ensure that all questions and concerns are addressed.”
At the forum, Con Edison will provide an update on the current status of the plan and will also review and discuss the studies that are being performed to support the company's Article X application, the filing required by the New York Public Service Commission whenever a generating plant that is being modified or constructed will exceed 80 megawatts of capacity.
