CON EDISON URGES ITS CUSTOMERS TO REDUCE ELECTRICITY USE
Con Edison is urging its New York City and Westchester County customers to reduce all non-essential electricity usage as a result of reduced reserves of electric generating capacity statewide. The New York Power Pool, an organization representing New York State's eight major power utilities called for the energy conservation measure early this afternoon. They determined that an unexpected shutdown of an additional generating station in the state might lead to voltage reductions due to today's high heat and humidity.
Con Edison is asking all its customers to reduce air conditioning use and curtail the use of appliances such as washers, dryers and other energy-intensive equipment until electric demand is reduced later tonight.
Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants.
