For Immediate Release: April 16, 1998
NEARLY 37,000 REGISTER FOR RETAIL CHOICE
IN FIRST FIFTEEN DAYS OF ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con
Edison) announced today that 36,862 customers registered for
Retail Choice in the first fifteen days of the April
enrollment period, representing 356 of the 500 megawatts
available for the program's first phase. A total of 32,448
are residential, religious and small commercial customers.
Retail Choice gives Con Edison customers the
opportunity to select an electricity supplier from about 20
energy services companies (ESCOs) currently registered with
the New York State Public Service Commission. To sign up
for the program, customers can contact one or more ESCOs
directly or call the Con Edison Retail Choice Information
line - 1-800-780-2884 - and request that their names be
released to all ESCOs. A list of registered ESCOs also is
available on our web site.
"All indications are that the number of those
enrolling in the Retail Choice Program will continue to
increase," said Gary Groscup, Con Edison's vice
president of customer operations. "Availability for
this initial phase of the program is limited, so anyone
interested in participating should enroll as soon as
possible," Groscup added.
Con Edison is one of the nation's largest utility
companies, with more than $7 billion in annual revenues and
approximately $15 billion in assets. The company, a
subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., provides electric,
gas and steam service to more than three million customers
in New York City and Westchester County, New York.
