East River Repowering Project
On August 28, 2001, the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) approved Con Edison’s application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need to repower its East River Generating Station. This approval followed a 13-month environmental and technical review by the Siting Board. As part of the review process, the Siting Board held public hearings where approximately 120 statements were received and additional written statements were also submitted. Formal evidentiary hearings were also conducted. All comments and testimony received by the Siting Board are part of the formal case record considered by the Board in making its decision.
In reaching its decision, the Siting Board concluded that the facility is in the public interest, that it minimizes environmental impacts and that it is consistent with the state’s energy policies and long range planning objectives. Further it was determined that the facility is compatible with public health and safety and that it will meet all applicable New York State Department of Environmental Conservation standards for air emission control, air quality and water usage.
