solar energy - permits and inspection

Please be aware that the following requirements are not monitored or controlled by Con Edison. We recommend that you consider and discuss them with your solar contractor prior to installation.

For installation of your new solar-energy system, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) requires an electrical permit and a building permit. Obtaining these permits is a separate process from those involving Con Edison and NYSERDA.

The electric permit is obtained from the Bureau of Electrical Control (BEC), which is a section of the DOB. The building permit, called a PW1 Alt 2, is also obtained through the DOB but must be certified by a third-party structural engineer.

The solar PV installation must meet safety and code requirements set by both the DOB and the New York City Fire Department, including zoning laws, fire codes, and landmarks review. A certified installer should understand the permitting process if they have performed other such projects in the Con Edison territory. More information is offered through the NYC Buildings website.
